The Right Cross-Country Technique for Beginners

  • If you’re new to cross-country skiing, one question comes up first: Which technique is easier to learn? No matter your athletic background, we recommend starting with the classic technique – and once you feel confident, you can move on to skating.
  • Why start with classic technique? Perfect for beginners: The classic style feels natural – much like walking – making it the ideal way to get comfortable on the tracks. It's the best choice to get familiar with both the equipment and terrain.
  • Easier to get started: With two parallel tracks and intuitive movements, you’ll learn the diagonal stride and double pole push step-by-step – without feeling overwhelmed.

Preparing for the Cross-Country Lesson

  • The Right Cross-Country Skis: The ideal ski length depends on your technique and experience level. For classic style, we usually recommend skis that are 20 to 30 cm longer than your height. For skating, skis are slightly shorter – about 5 to 15 cm longer than your height. Your body weight also plays a role: heavier skiers often need slightly longer skis for better stability and control.
  • Choosing the Right Poles: Pole length varies depending on technique and body size: For classic style, go for poles about 83–85% of your height. For skating, choose slightly longer poles – about 88–90% of your height. A quick formula: Classic = your height (cm) × 0.84 and Skating = your height (cm) × 0.89.
  • Style & Comfort on the Track: Comfort and function come first! We recommend breathable clothing, a warm hat or headband, thin gloves, sun protection, and sports sunglasses. Proper cross-country ski boots round off your outfit. Need gear? You’ll find everything you need at Jug Sports Arlberg, right next to the ski school office.
